Slate & Tile Roof Repairs in Dublin

Slipped or damaged slates are one of the most common reasons homeowners in Dublin call a roofer. Slate and concrete tile roofs last a long time, but fixing nails corrode, mortar bedding fails and individual units crack or are lifted by wind.

A single displaced covering can be enough to let water into the roof. It is also worth checking whether the piece you can see from the ground is the only one that has moved.

Concrete tiled pitched roof with ridge tiles on a suburban house

What we repair

  • Slipped slates sitting out of line on the slope
  • Cracked or broken tiles, with pieces in the gutter or garden
  • Missing coverings leaving the felt below exposed
  • Storm displacement along exposed edges and verges
  • Localised leaks below a damaged area
  • Ridge and hip defects, including loose or crumbling bedding
  • Flashing and valleys next to the damaged section

How we approach the job

  1. 1.Look beyond the obvious defect

The slate you can see from the road is often not the only one that has moved. We check the surrounding area, the ridge and the nearby details before quoting.

  2. 2.Fix properly, not with mortar

Replacement slates are mechanically secured rather than simply bedded in mortar, which tends to fail again after a few seasons.

  3. 3.Match as closely as stock allows

We match size, profile and colour as closely as available materials permit. On older or unusual roofs an exact match is not always possible, and we will tell you in advance.

  4. 4.Ridge, hip and verge work

Loose ridge and hip tiles are re-bedded and repointed, or dry-fixed where that suits the roof better.

When slipping keeps happening

On older slate roofs the fixing nails corrode before the slates do. The pattern to watch for is slates slipping in a different place each winter. Once that sets in, continued patch repairs stop being good value compared with re-slating the slope.

Moss and debris

Heavy moss holds water against the covering and blocks gutters and valleys. It can be cleared, but aggressive pressure washing damages slates and tiles and is best avoided.

FAQ

Slate & Tile Repairs — common questions

Can one missing slate really cause a leak?

It can. The covering is the first line of defence, and once it is gone the felt beneath is exposed to wind-driven rain and ultraviolet light.

Will you be able to match my existing slates?

Usually we can match closely on size and colour, though on older or unusual roofs there can be a difference in tone that weathers in over time. An exact match cannot always be promised.

Why do slates keep slipping in the same area?

Typically corroded nails or deteriorating battens beneath. We will inspect and tell you honestly whether repairs or re-slating makes more sense.

Do you repair ridge tiles?

Yes. Loose, cracked or displaced ridge and hip tiles are re-bedded, repointed or replaced.

My slates came off in a storm — what now?

Do not go up to look. Call us, and if water is getting in, emergency roof repair call-outs are available 24/7.
