What affects the cost of replacing guttering?

• Total length of gutter run and the number of elevations involved
• Whether it is a partial replacement — one elevation — or the whole property
• Height: single-storey, two-storey, or above a rear return or extension
• Access, including whether ladders are adequate or a tower or scaffold is required
• Number of downpipes, their routes and where they discharge
• Corners, stop ends, outlets and junctions, which take longer than straight runs
• Condition of the fascia the brackets fix into — see fascia and soffit
• Removing and disposing of the existing guttering
• Whether the roof covering at the eaves also needs attention while access is there

Partial or full replacement?

Replacing one failed elevation is perfectly reasonable and we do it regularly. It is the obvious choice where, for example, a rear gutter has been damaged or has dropped while the front is in good order.

Full replacement is worth considering where the system is old throughout, where joints are failing in several places, or where brackets and fixings have deteriorated generally. A new section joined into a brittle old system is a joint waiting to leak.

When repair is the better answer

A single leaking joint, a blocked outlet, a loose bracket or a gutter that has dropped slightly out of fall can usually be repaired or re-set. Clearing and re-fixing is cheaper and often solves the problem completely.

Replacement makes more sense when sections are cracked or sagging, when the profile is no longer available to match, when falls are wrong along the run, or when repeated repairs have already been made. Gutters, fascia and the roofline together

Gutter brackets fix into the fascia, so the state of the fascia matters. Where timber fascia behind an old gutter has been soaked for years, fixing a new gutter to it is not a long-term solution, and the roofline work should be considered at the same time.

Downpipes and where water goes

A gutter is only half the system. Undersized, blocked or poorly positioned downpipes cause overflow at the gutter and damp at the wall below, and replacing gutters without addressing them leaves the problem in place.

We look at the discharge points and the gullies as part of the assessment, because water arriving at the base of a wall causes more damage than water spilling over a gutter.
