How we approach the job
1.Clear first, then look
Gutters are cleared and checked under water where possible, so leaks and poor falls can be seen rather than guessed at.
2.Repair where sensible
Individual brackets, joints, outlets and sections can often be replaced. Where a run is brittle or badly out of line, replacing the run gives better value.
3.Get the fall right
A gutter that does not fall correctly to the outlet holds water and overflows no matter how clean it is.
4.Check the roof edge while we are there
Fascia, soffit and the bottom course of the roof covering are checked at the same time, as problems at the eaves tend to travel together.
Why drainage protects the building
Working gutters keep water off the roof edge, away from the fascia and soffit, and off the external walls. Where they overflow year after year, the damage usually shows up as rotten roofline timber and damp walls long before anyone blames the gutter.
How often should gutters be cleared?
Once a year suits most houses, and twice where there are trees close by. Clearing after autumn leaf fall prevents most winter overflows.
Repair or replacement?
A blockage, a single leaking joint or a failed bracket is a repair. Where the same run keeps leaking, has sagged, or the sections themselves are cracked and brittle, gutter replacement is normally better value than repairing it again each winter.

Is an overflowing gutter a roof problem?
Usually not. It is most often a blockage, a poor fall or a failed joint — a drainage issue rather than a failure of the roof covering.
Can you replace just one section?
Yes, where the existing profile can be matched. If the system is old and brittle, replacing a full run usually gives a better result.
Why is the wall below my gutter always damp?
Typically because water is escaping at a joint or over the edge and running down the wall each time it rains. Fixing the gutter normally stops it.
Do you clear gutters as well as repair them?
Yes, and clearing is often the first step — sometimes it resolves the problem on its own.
