Roof Cleaning & Moss Removal in Dublin
Moss is normal on Irish roofs, and a green roof is not automatically a failing one. What moss does cause is drainage trouble: it breaks away, packs into gutters, valleys and outlets, and sends water somewhere it was never meant to go. Heavy growth also holds moisture against a covering for months at a time.
We remove moss by hand from safe access and clear what comes down out of the rainwater goods, so the roof sheds water properly again. We do not pressure wash roof coverings. Water driven at pressure can get under slates and tiles, and can coarsen the surface of concrete tiles, which risks doing more harm to the covering than the moss itself.

When a roof clean is worth doing
- Thick moss bridging into the gutter line or filling a valley
- Gutters overflowing during rain with moss debris visible in them
- Moss and plant growth in ridge, hip or verge joints
- A flat roof outlet blocking repeatedly with washed-down material
- Heavy growth on a shaded slope that has never been cleared
- A roof being prepared for sale, survey or further work
How we carry the work out
1.Look at the covering before cleaning it
If slates or tiles are spalling, delaminating or losing surface, cleaning exposes the problem rather than solving it. We say that before taking the job on.
2.Remove by hand, not by pressure
Moss is taken off with appropriate hand tools from safe access, at a rate the covering will tolerate. No high-pressure lance goes near a slate, tile or flat roof covering.
3.Clear the drainage as part of the job
Gutters, valleys, downpipes and outlets are cleared of the material that comes down, because that is where moss actually causes leaks.
4.Report what we found up there
Being on the roof is an opportunity. We tell you about slipped coverings, perished ridge mortar or failing flashing we came across, with no obligation to have it done.
Why pressure washing is the wrong tool
Working pressure can force water up under the laps of slates and tiles, past the point where the covering is designed to shed it, and into the roof space. On concrete tiles it can erode the surface finish, and a tile left more absorbent than before can hold moisture and take moss back on sooner.
Treatments, where they suit the covering
An appropriate biocidal treatment can slow regrowth on some roofs. Not every product suits every covering, and leadwork, planting and drainage all have to be considered. We explain what we would apply and why, and we do not claim any treatment makes a roof permanently moss-free.
Moss is often a symptom worth reading
Sudden heavy growth in one area can point at a slope holding water because a covering has slipped, a gutter is discharging back onto the roof, or a flat roof is not draining. Our moss on the roof page explains what the growth can and cannot tell you.
Cleaning is not a repair
A clean roof looks dramatically better and sheds water properly, but it does not fix a defect. Where the inspection finds slipped slates, failed flashing or perished mortar, that work is quoted separately and you decide what you want done.
Where a clean is not the right recommendation
On a covering at the end of its working life, cleaning is money spent on appearance. We would rather tell you that and talk about repair versus replacement than take payment for a job that does nothing for the roof.

Do you pressure wash roofs?
No. Pressure washing forces water under slates and tiles and strips the protective surface off concrete tiles. We remove moss by hand from safe access, with appropriate treatment where it suits the covering.
Does moss actually damage a roof?
Mostly indirectly. It blocks gutters, valleys and outlets so water goes where it should not, and thick growth holds moisture against a covering that may already be deteriorating. A sound roof with moss on a shaded slope is a common and largely cosmetic situation.
Will the moss come back?
On a shaded Irish slope, some regrowth over time is normal. How quickly depends on exposure, the covering and whether a treatment suited to it was used. Anyone promising a roof will never grow moss again is overstating it.
Do you clear the gutters as well?
Yes. Clearing the gutters, valleys, downpipes and outlets of the material that comes off the roof is part of the job, not an extra — leaving it there would simply move the problem.
Should the roof be inspected first?
It should. Cleaning a covering that is spalling or delaminating exposes the deterioration rather than fixing it, so we look at the condition of the roof before recommending a clean.
