How we approach the job
1.Inspect before recommending anything
We look at the covering, the fixings, the details and the roof space where there is access. Only then is it reasonable to say whether repair or replacement is the right call.
2.Price repair against replacement
If the roof is repairable, we will say so and quote the repair. Being told your roof does not need replacing is a perfectly normal outcome of an inspection.
3.Strip, check and rebuild the detailing
A re-slate is the opportunity to deal with battens, underlay, valleys, flashing and chimney junctions properly, rather than laying new slates over old problems.
4.Agree scope, access and matching
Slate type, access and scaffolding, and how closely the new covering will match, are all settled in writing before work begins.
Does my slate roof need repairing or replacing?
Isolated defects are usually repairable — a handful of slipped or cracked slates, a failed flashing, a leaking valley — and on a sound roof that is the right work to do. Replacement becomes the sensible option when failures are spread across the roof, when slates are breaking up rather than just slipping, when fixings are failing generally, or when the same roof has needed repair after repair. Age on its own is not the deciding factor.
Matching an existing slate
Not every slate can be matched exactly, particularly on older properties. Where a close match matters — a visible elevation, a terrace of similar houses — we will discuss the options rather than assume.

They are assessed as part of the job. Renewing a covering while leaving failed valleys or flashing in place is a common cause of a new roof leaking, so those details are included in the scope.
Will the new slates match the existing roof?
We match as closely as available materials allow, but an exact match is not always possible on older roofs. We will be clear about that before the work is agreed.
How long does a re-slate take?
It depends on the size of the roof, the access, the weather and what is found once the covering is off. We give a realistic timeframe with the quotation.
