EPDM Roofing in Dublin
EPDM is a single-ply rubber membrane used on flat and low-slope roofs. On a typical Dublin extension or garage the sheet is laid in one piece across the deck, bonded down, and dressed into the upstands, trims and outlet, so there are few or no joints across the open area of the roof.

How an EPDM roof is assessed and installed
1.Check the deck first
A membrane is only as good as what it is laid on. Soft, damp or uneven boarding is made good or replaced before anything is bonded down, otherwise the new roof will fail early at exactly the same places.
2.Confirm falls and the outlet
Falls, outlet position and rainwater capacity are checked before the covering goes on. A roof that ponds badly is a drainage problem, and changing the covering on its own does not fix it.
3.Detail the edges and upstands
Almost all flat-roof leaks happen at the perimeter, the wall abutment or the outlet. Trims, kerbs, corners and upstands are formed with the matching accessories rather than improvised.
4.Explain what the roof actually needs
Sometimes the honest answer is a localised repair to the existing covering rather than a new roof. We say which we think it is, and why, before you commit to anything.
Where EPDM can suit a roof
It tends to suit simple, regular flat and low-slope areas — a rear extension, a garage, a porch, a dormer cheek or a small outbuilding — where a single sheet can cover the field of the roof with minimal jointing. The rubber stays flexible in cold weather and copes with normal movement in the deck. On heavily cut-up roofs with many penetrations, upstands and changes of level, other systems can detail more easily, so it is not the automatic answer for every flat roof.
Drainage decides how the roof performs
EPDM is fully waterproof, but no flat roof is designed to be a pond. Water standing for days after rain adds weight, collects silt and puts constant load on the details. We check falls, the outlet or gutter, and whether anything upstream is discharging onto the roof, and deal with that as part of the work rather than leaving it.
Signs an existing EPDM roof needs attention
Staining on the ceiling below, a lap or upstand that has lifted away from the wall, a puncture or tear from foot traffic or a dropped tool, an outlet that has pulled loose, or a membrane that looks stretched, wrinkled or has debris trapped under it. Rubber roofs are usually repairable, and a small puncture patched early is a far smaller job than a soaked deck.
EPDM compared with other flat-roof systems
Against felt, EPDM has far fewer joints across the open roof; felt in turn is long established and easy to patch. Against GRP fibreglass, EPDM stays flexible and is installed cold, while fibreglass cures into a hard seamless laminate that takes foot traffic well and can be laid on complex shapes. Liquid systems come into their own where detailing is complicated or the roof cannot easily be stripped. No one of them is best everywhere — the deck, shape, access and existing condition decide.
Repair, re-cover or replace
Isolated damage on a sound rubber roof is normally a repair. A failed felt roof over dry, solid boarding can often be stripped and re-covered. Where the deck has taken in water, the boarding and any wet insulation come out first — a new membrane laid over a wet deck traps the moisture and shortens the life of the whole roof.

What is an EPDM roof?
A flat roof covered with a single-ply synthetic rubber membrane. It is normally laid as one large sheet bonded to the deck and dressed into the edges, upstands and outlet, so the open area of the roof has few or no joints.
Can EPDM roofing be repaired?
Usually, yes. Punctures, tears and lifted laps can generally be patched or re-bonded where the rest of the membrane and the deck below are sound. Widespread damage, or a deck that has taken in water, points towards re-covering instead.
Is EPDM suitable for flat roofs?
It is used on flat and low-slope roofs, and suits simple regular areas such as extensions and garages particularly well. On roofs with many penetrations, upstands or changes of level, another system may detail better, so we look at the roof before recommending it.
Can an old flat roof be replaced with EPDM?
Often. The old covering is stripped, the deck inspected and made good, the falls and outlet confirmed, and the new membrane installed. If the boarding or insulation is wet, that has to be dealt with first rather than covered over.
